As Dramaturg, Lane Pitcher worked closely with Fei Gao to develop The Shell - Angel from a loose conceptual starting point into a fully realised live performance work. The collaboration focused heavily on movement development, emotional pacing and physical storytelling, refining how intimacy, distance and transformation could be expressed through the body within the scale and energy of SOFT CENTRE’s live music environment at White Bay Power Station. Lane mentored Fei through the structuring of performance beats, audience relationship and spatial awareness, shaping a work designed to cut through and resonate within an intense, transient festival setting.
I’m incredibly grateful to have worked with Lane Pitcher as the dramaturg for The Shell-Angel presented at Soft Centre 2025.
Lane consistently went above and beyond in supporting the development of the work, offering thoughtful movement guidance through detailed breakdowns of the piece’s timeline and structure. She provided invaluable professional consultation, not only on the presentation of my costume, but also on how to move with it in ways that maximised its presence on stage.
She also generously sourced additional staff and collaborators in a timely manner to better support the delivery of the project. Throughout the process, Lane balanced the integrity of the work and its conceptual vision with great care, sensitivity, and professionalism.
